Carrick finds two Man Utd undroppables in Roma comeback win
Carrick finds two Man Utd undroppables vs Roma

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick will be reluctant to leave two players out of his starting line-up again after the Red Devils' second-half comeback secured a 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma.

The team were booed off at half-time after falling 2-0 behind following a series of defensive errors. They emerged from the tunnel transformed and quickly overwhelmed their Italian opponents.

Captain Bruno Fernandes ignited the crowd at Old Trafford when his penalty, initially missed but retaken due to encroachment, flew into the roof of the net. United dominated the second half, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice in the closing stages to end a nine-match winless run before being sent off in stoppage time.

Mainoo's Impact on United's Midfield

Kobbie Mainoo did not have a flawless game against Roma. He was dispossessed near the halfway line, allowing Rodrigo Mora to set up Matias Soule for the opening goal. Yet United's best 45 minutes of the season coincided with the Englishman's return to the team.

Mainoo has become the heartbeat and driving force of United's midfield, allowing Fernandes to focus his efforts further up the pitch. United thrived under Carrick with Mainoo alongside Casemiro last season, and Mainoo must remain in the team whether paired with Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba or Andrey Santos.

Cunha's Decisive Contribution

Cunha was United's best player even before scoring. He won the penalty that Fernandes converted, a moment that shifted the momentum in United's favour. His ability to play across the front line and score goals makes him consistently valuable to Carrick, and he can play alongside Marcus Rashford when the forward returns.

Carrick also praised 19-year-old Shea Lacey after his most impressive cameo yet, which included a matchwinning assist to Cunha in the final moments. With Amad lacking confidence in front of goal, there is a place in the team to be won.
