Michael Carrick has leapt to the defence of Bruno Fernandes, insisting that criticism of the Manchester United captain is "lazy" and fails to acknowledge his creative contribution.
Carrick's Defence of Fernandes
Speaking to the media, Carrick, a former United midfielder, said: "People look at Bruno and see the frustration, the arms waving, but they don't see the numbers. He creates more chances than almost anyone in the league. That's not lazy, that's quality."
Fernandes has been a key figure for United since his arrival in January 2020, registering double figures for goals and assists in each of his first three full seasons. This season, he has already provided five assists in six Premier League appearances.
Criticism of the Captain
The Portugal international has faced scrutiny over his body language and perceived lack of discipline in midfield, with some pundits questioning his suitability as captain. However, Carrick believes such criticism overlooks Fernandes's importance to the team's attacking play.
"He's the kind of player who takes risks, tries the difficult pass, and sometimes it doesn't come off. But you have to accept that with the rewards he brings," Carrick added.

Fernandes's influence extends beyond statistics, with his leadership and drive often cited by teammates as a motivating factor. United currently sit third in the Premier League, with Fernandes having started every match this season.
