Manchester United are preparing for a crucial Premier League weekend, but Michael Carrick has also implemented a significant change aimed at the club's long-term development. The first team faces Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, looking to bounce back from a dramatic draw with Everton. While Carrick has numerous options at his disposal, he could also turn to the academy to strengthen his matchday squad.
Academy mirrors first-team system
Carrick has closely monitored the academy sides since returning to United at the start of the year. The club's U21 team has now adopted a 4-2-3-1 formation under coach Adam Lawrence, switching from a 4-3-3 to replicate the first-team system. According to the Daily Mail, the U21s have also copied Carrick's use of a false nine, mirroring how he deploys Matheus Cunha.
This approach is designed to give academy players a smoother transition to the first team, as they will already be familiar with the demands of their roles. The loan of Chido Obi and the departure of academy forward Louie Bradbury to Stoke City could signal a long-term shift away from orthodox strikers. The formation change also allows 15-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel, who featured for the first team during pre-season, to learn Bruno Fernandes' position as he establishes himself in the U21 side.
Premier League grants festive schedule request
The Premier League has responded to requests from United and other clubs by agreeing to announce the festive schedule earlier. United pushed for the league and broadcasters to decide which December games would be televised sooner, giving supporters more time to plan. The Daily Mail reports that United met with senior Premier League and broadcast officials to request the information be published more than a month earlier than last year.
The Football Supporters Association was also involved in talks to bring the announcement forward. It has been confirmed that United will host Nottingham Forest on Sunday, December 27, with a 4.30pm kick-off, and will play Sunderland at Old Trafford on Wednesday, December 30, at 7.30pm.
