Jamie Carragher has aimed a pointed dig at Gary Lineker after the former Match of the Day host secured a lucrative Netflix deal for his podcast, The Rest is Football. Lineker left the BBC in May and will now work with Netflix during the 2026 World Cup, reportedly earning more than the £1.35 million he made at the broadcaster.
The topic came up on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage on Tuesday night, where reporter Anita Jones joked about receiving some of the Netflix money. Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards laughed off the suggestion, prompting Carragher to interject. “Oh, the Netflix deal for the podcast that no-one listens to? Honestly, I don’t know anyone who listens to it!” Carragher said.
According to a recent report by Edison, however, The Rest is Football is the fifth most-listened to podcast in the UK and the most popular sports podcast. In contrast, Carragher’s own show, The Overlap, which also features Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott, ranks 17th on the list.
Lineker described the Netflix deal as a “fantastic opportunity for the three of us to do what we love – talk football every day – but on a truly global stage”. The Rest is Football will release daily episodes during the World Cup, filmed by Lineker, Shearer and Richards in New York. The show is produced by Goalhanger, which recently surpassed 250,000 paying subscribers across its network, generating 70 million episode views per month.
