Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to make three key signings in January to reignite their faltering Premier League title defence. The former Reds defender spoke after his old club lost 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, their 11th league defeat of a miserable campaign.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said Liverpool should target a right winger, a right-back and a central midfielder. 'Replace Mo Salah with a right winger, a right-back and a central midfielder then the players you bought last summer like Ekitike, Isak, Wirtz, become better players,' he argued.
Carragher criticised the club's summer spending spree as 'not Liverpool-like', comparing it to Real Madrid's approach. He believes the Reds cannot repeat such expenditure and must now buy the 'right players for the right money'. He added that the squad needs only three starters rather than six or seven new faces.
Fellow pundit Gary Neville also weighed in, suggesting the summer recruitment itself contributed to Liverpool's struggles. He pointed out that new signings like Kerkez and Frimpong have failed to match the standards of Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, while Salah has not replicated previous form.
Neville, however, wondered whether the situation is 'really bad' or if Liverpool merely need patience for their recent arrivals to settle and flourish next season.
