Jamie Carragher has criticised Cody Gakpo for his selfish play during Liverpool's goalless draw with Manchester United, suggesting the Dutchman has overtaken Mohamed Salah as the Reds' greediest player. The former Liverpool defender expressed frustration on commentary as Gakpo fired shots off target instead of passing to better-placed teammates.
Speaking during the match, Carragher said: “No! Gakpo, that is so poor. I’ve said this about Mo Salah, he’s been locked out on the edge of the box so far and he’s still thinking about shooting even though it’s clearly not on. Just move the ball on, don’t force chances!” He added that Gakpo ignored a clear run from Joe Gomez, leaving Curtis Jones unhappy.
Liverpool dominated possession but failed to create clear-cut chances, with several players wasting opportunities. Gakpo had two wayward strikes when better options were available, while Salah also drew criticism for attempting to cut inside and shoot rather than crossing.
The result saw Liverpool miss the chance to go top of the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp's side have relied on late goals in recent weeks, a trend pundits deem unsustainable. Darwin Nunez also struggled, dropping deep and misplacing passes, leaving Liverpool without a focal point in attack.
