Jamie Carragher has admitted he was 'glad' to see Arsenal drop points in the Premier League title race, though he still prefers the Gunners to beat Manchester City to the crown. The former Liverpool defender said the slip-up at Wolves keeps the contest exciting, which benefits the league as a whole.
Arsenal squandered a two-goal lead against bottom side Wolves on Wednesday night, conceding in stoppage time to draw 2-2. It was the second consecutive league draw after a stalemate with Brentford, allowing City to close the gap to two points with a game in hand.
Speaking on CBS, Carragher explained: 'I think I would rather Arsenal win it, because it is good for a league to have different winners. Over the last three years we'd have had three different winners, which I think is good.' However, he added: 'What I don't want, unless it is my own team, is to run away with a league, so I'm glad with that result tonight because it makes it exciting.'
The Gunners have been in every title race since 2022/23 but have finished second in the last two seasons, with City overtaking them late on. Arsenal still have to visit the Etihad, and City now know they can win all remaining games to overhaul Mikel Arteta's side.
Carragher's comments reflect a desire for competitiveness and a change of champion after eight years of dominance between City and Liverpool. Arsenal have not won a trophy since the FA Cup in 2020, despite heavy investment, but remain in contention for all four trophies this season.
