Jamie Carragher has dismissed Peter Schmeichel's suggestion that Chelsea can win the Premier League with Robert Sanchez in goal. The former Liverpool defender questioned Schmeichel on CBS Sports, asking whether the Blues could triumph with the Spanish goalkeeper. Schmeichel initially hesitated before replying, 'Erm yes, and better defenders.' Carragher immediately retorted, 'No chance Peter, no chance!'
Sanchez has faced criticism for inconsistent form, including a red card against Manchester United. Carragher had previously argued that Chelsea should have replaced him in the summer transfer window. Despite the club retaining Sanchez, his performances have continued to attract scrutiny.
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards noted that Schmeichel lacked conviction in his answer. Sanchez, signed from Brighton for £25 million in 2023, has made 69 appearances for Chelsea, keeping 22 clean sheets. However, he has not secured the first-choice spot, competing with Djordje Petrovic and Filip Jorgensen.
Chelsea sold Petrovic to Bournemouth and Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal in the summer. Sanchez is expected to start against Liverpool this weekend, while the Reds face their own goalkeeping issues with Alisson injured.
