Cardiff City 5-1 Watford: Moylan double inspires Bluebirds

Cardiff City produced a stunning first-half display to thrash Watford 5-1 at Cardiff City Stadium, with Jack Moylan scoring twice as Brian Barry-Murphy's side climbed away from the Championship relegation zone.

The Bluebirds were ruthless against a beleaguered Watford outfit, scoring four times before the break to put the contest beyond doubt and deliver a timely response to Saturday's defeat at Blackburn Rovers.

Moylan, deployed as a makeshift centre-forward in the absence of a recognised striker, led the charge with two goals in the opening 35 minutes. An own goal from Mattie Pollock and a superb Ollie Tanner strike completed a devastating first-half blitz, before Callum Robinson added a fifth late on.

Watford managed a late consolation through Hector Kyprianou, but the damage had long been done as the visitors' miserable afternoon continued.

Early scare and penalty breakthrough

Cardiff survived an early scare when Myron Boadu broke through on goal in the opening minutes, only for Nathan Trott to make an important save and deny the Watford striker.

The hosts soon found their rhythm, with Moylan testing goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia from distance before winning a penalty in the 11th minute. Ollie Tanner intercepted a loose Watford pass and fed Moylan inside the box. The Irishman shifted the ball onto his right foot before being brought down by a reckless challenge from Pollock.

Moylan stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to give Cardiff the lead.

First-half blitz

The forward, who was picked to play as striker, doubled his tally in the 35th minute after Cian Ashford capitalised on another Watford mistake. Ashford drove forward on the break and picked out Moylan, who kept his composure to slot home via the post after Ravaglia slipped.

Cardiff were rampant, and their third goal arrived six minutes later when Pollock turned Joel Bagan's dangerous corner into his own net. The Watford defender, already responsible for the penalty, endured another moment to forget.

There was still time for Tanner to get in on the act before half-time. After Moylan had tested Ravaglia from 25 yards, Tanner collected the ball on the edge of the area and drilled a superb finish into the bottom corner in stoppage time.

Second-half control and late goals

Cardiff went into the interval four goals ahead after a devastating display of attacking football, with the visiting supporters making their frustrations clear.

Watford attempted to respond after the break, but Cardiff continued to create opportunities. Moylan almost completed his hat-trick within a minute of the restart, heading wide from another excellent Bagan delivery. Tanner then missed a chance to add his second after the ball fell kindly to him inside the box.

The Bluebirds were awarded another penalty in the 64th minute when Ashford played in Chris Willock, who was bundled over by Edo Kayembe. Willock took responsibility but saw his effort saved by Ravaglia, denying Cardiff a fifth from the spot.

Barry-Murphy made changes as the game progressed, with David Turnbull and Calum Scanlon introduced before Robinson and Isaak Davies entered late on.

Robinson made an immediate impact, collecting the ball and firing a superb low finish into the net in the 85th minute. The forward's celebration was muted after spending more than 80 minutes waiting for his opportunity.

Watford grabbed a consolation two minutes later when Kyprianou headed home from a free-kick, but it did little to take the shine off Cardiff's emphatic victory.

After a difficult start to the campaign, the Bluebirds delivered the sort of performance their supporters had been waiting for. Moylan's double, Tanner's brilliance and a ruthless first-half display ensured Barry-Murphy's side made a statement in their battle to climb the Championship table.
