England and Norway will clash in a massive World Cup 2026 quarter-final tie on Saturday night in Miami. The Three Lions head into the match with sky-high confidence after their incredible 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico at the formidable Estadio Azteca in the round of 16.
England Favourites, But Norway Thrive as Underdogs
England are favourites to book only their second World Cup semi-final berth since 1990, though that underdog tag will suit Norway just fine. At their first World Cup since 1998, the Norwegians have been one of the tournament’s feel-good stories, with Erling Haaland scoring for fun to fire them into the last eight for the very first time. Underestimate Norway and Haaland at your peril — as record five-time winners Brazil found out to their cost in New Jersey last weekend.
Expert Predictions
Standard Sport’s team of reporters have made their picks as to who will advance to a semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland in Atlanta next week.
Dom Smith, England Correspondent
“Of course England can beat Norway. The pertinent question is whether they will, and it’s going to be fascinating to find out. Not only did Norway stun Brazil in the last round, they also dominated possession against the five-time winners, while England had just 33 per cent in their win against Mexico. So which way the share of the ball falls is going to be very interesting. England need to be confident. This Norway team have been superb and boast a world-class striker, but so do England. Whereas this is Norway’s first-ever major tournament quarter-final — a trip into the unknown — England have been here before. England are favourites.” Prediction: England 2-1 Norway
Matt Verri, Football Reporter
“Goals look a certainty here, with both teams far more convincing in attack than in defence. Norway were superb against Brazil but England have far more legs and physicality in midfield than Carlo Ancelotti's team. If an exhausted group have sufficiently recovered from their heroics at the Azteca, the Three Lions should be confident. Even when things have not been going well, Tuchel continues to impress with his in-game tweaks, benefitting from the hydration breaks. It is easy to imagine Haaland enjoying success against England's centre-backs and I can see him getting on the scoresheet, but the Three Lions can still overpower Norway in another thrilling showdown.” Prediction: England 3-1 Norway
Sam Tabuteau, Football Reporter
“After the emotion of the Azteca and arguably the greatest English World Cup win ever on foreign soil, Tuchel's side must quickly regroup. A place in the semi-finals is on the line, fuelling a growing expectation that football could finally come home. Norway, themselves riding a wave of optimism after beating Brazil in the round of 16, will prove formidable opponents, with Haaland seemingly unstoppable. Managing Haaland's physicality and sharpshooting will be a real task for England's defence. Keep him quiet, though, and they might just seal a place in only their second World Cup semi-final this century.” Prediction: England 2-1 Norway, after extra time
Arthur Ferridge, World Cup Correspondent
“England fans may be losing sleep at the prospect of facing Haaland this weekend, but Tuchel will know exactly how to bring the striker's red-hot form to an end. Haaland is an elite marksman, but chiefly a service player. He is averaging one goal every 14 touches so far at this World Cup, but the Three Lions can neutralise his threat by ensuring he never gets the ball in the first place. That will mean keeping the clamps on creator-in-chief Martin Odegaard. The Arsenal captain will struggle to influence the match as he lines up opposite Jude Bellingham, Elliot Anderson and Gunners team-mate Declan Rice. If midfield is where this match will be won or lost, England can be confident of progressing.” Prediction: England 3-0 Norway
Oli Gent, Sports Reporter
“If you thought the round-of-32 clash with DR Congo was a hard watch, and you peered through bleary eyes behind the sofa at the last half-an-hour against Mexico, this could be another of those nights. If you’d have told England fans before the tournament that Norway would await the Three Lions in the last eight, nothing other than a victory would have been expected. But in reality, Stale Solbakken’s side have proven themselves to be far more than a one-man band relying on star striker Haaland. Their resoluteness in defence was staggering against Brazil, and Odegaard has been instrumental to flowing, attacking moves in a free role operating in the right half-space, similar to how he plays at Arsenal. Antonio Nusa has risen to the fore off the left flank as he asserts himself as one of the World Cup’s breakout stars, and his stunning curler against Ivory Coast in the first knockout round proved his quality as Europe’s top clubs begin to register interest in the RB Leipzig man. It remains to be seen who will line up for the Three Lions at right-back to face the pacey wideman, while Nico O’Reilly’s physicality will be much-needed when battling the towering Alexander Sorloth at the far post. Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi are well-versed in marshalling Haaland from their tussles in the Premier League, while the onus will be on Rice and Anderson to snuff out the service into the big striker’s feet. Can England defeat the valiant Vikings? Most definitely. Can they do it convincingly? That is a trickier question.” Prediction: England 2-1 Norway, after extra time
