British involvement in the Australian Open singles competitions has concluded at the third round stage, following Cameron Norrie's defeat to Alexander Zverev in Melbourne. This exit comes shortly after Emma Raducanu, the last British woman remaining, was eliminated in the second round of the tournament.
Zverev Secures Victory Over Norrie in Four Sets
World number three Alexander Zverev demonstrated his dominance over Cameron Norrie once again, securing a four-set victory to advance to the next round. The match began with a tightly contested first set, which Zverev claimed 7-5. Norrie showed resilience by bouncing back to take the second set 6-4, levelling the match.
However, the German player regained control in the third set, winning it 6-3. He then closed out the match decisively with a more one-sided fourth set, ending British hopes at this year's Australian Open.
Norrie's Consistent Role as Britain's Last Hope
Cameron Norrie has found himself as Britain's final representative at three consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. Remarkably, he has been the last British singles player standing in 14 of the last 24 major championships since the beginning of 2020.
This pattern follows his performance at last year's US Open, where he also exited in the third round, and his run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals during the summer of 2025.
Raducanu's Earlier Exit Paves the Way
Emma Raducanu, the British number one, had already departed the tournament on Wednesday after a straight-sets defeat to unseeded opponent Anastasia Potapova. This represented a slight regression from her performance twelve months earlier, when she reached the third round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka, who subsequently advanced to the final before being defeated by Madison Keys.
The dual exits of Raducanu and Norrie mean that no British players remain in either the men's or women's singles draws at Melbourne Park, marking the end of British participation in the singles events at this year's Australian Open.
