Brentford have confirmed they are working with police to identify those responsible for kicking a rugby ball from the top of a nearby building onto the field of play during their Premier League match against Liverpool.
The incident occurred during Brentford's 2-1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium, with a video circulating widely on social media. In the clip, a man can be seen volleying the rugby ball from a balcony overlooking the stadium while the match was still in progress.
The ball landed on the field of play, and in a separate clip, a man can be seen carrying the ball away from the pitch alongside the caption "Wrong sport mate".
Club statement on dangerous behaviour
Brentford have now confirmed they have reported the incident to police, and an investigation is under way.
A statement from the club released on Monday read: "Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
"Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
"The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
"The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."
