Birmingham 1-1 Ipswich: Championship Opener Ends in Dramatic Draw

Birmingham City and Ipswich Town played out a dramatic 1-1 draw in their Championship opener at St Andrew's, with the visitors snatching a point from an injury-time penalty. The Blues dominated large parts of the game but were left frustrated after conceding a late spot-kick.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna acknowledged his side's struggles, stating: 'It was a really tough game … we didn't impose ourselves well enough … the boys kept going … good impact from the bench.' He added that the late goal would serve as a 'big confidence booster' for his team.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies expressed disappointment with the penalty decision, calling it 'really harsh' and noting that 'you won't see many of those given.' He praised his team's performance, saying: 'For the large part of the game we were the better team … we didn't let them settle … Ipswich are a very good footballing side … they couldn't do that tonight.'

The equaliser came in the 10th minute of stoppage time when Jacob Greaves' header struck Lyndon Dykes' arm, prompting the referee to point to the spot. George Hirst converted the penalty, slotting down the middle for Ipswich's first shot on target all night. Hirst later commented: 'That's what I get paid to do … it's in the back of the net … that's all that matters.'

The late drama sparked a melee between the two sets of players, with Conor Chaplin booked for his celebrations. Despite the heated finish, both sides eventually made peace at the final whistle. Davies concluded: 'There are mixed emotions right now … frustrated … but I can see how many positives we can take from that.'
