Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Manchester United's Luke Shaw as Tottenham's poor start to the season continued with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Spurs arrived winless in the Premier League and bottom of the table, and they created plenty of chances without making the most of them. Bryan Mbeumo put United 1-0 up with just over a quarter of an hour to play, and tensions boiled over soon after.
Tempers flare after crunching tackles
Bentancur and Shaw came to blows following some crunching sliding tackles. The United left-back shoved his Tottenham counterpart in retribution for two full-blooded tackles - one against Shaw and the other against Cunha - after the play was blown dead. Bentancur then headbutted Shaw in response.
A full-blown melee ensued, and Bentancur saw red for violent conduct. Shaw escaped with a booking, as did Jan Paul van Hecke.
Late equaliser earns a point
“The lack of discipline at this stage of the game for Roberto De Zerbi is just not what he needs,” said Gary Neville on Sky Sports.
A late equaliser from Dominic Solanke ensured the points were shared. The result lifted Tottenham to 18th in the table, clear of Coventry on goal difference and one point ahead of Fulham, who prop up the table after their defeat at Ipswich.
