Medhi Benatia has reversed his resignation and will remain as Marseille's sporting director, just days after announcing his departure. The 38-year-old, who reportedly clashed with Mason Greenwood, confirmed his exit after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Strasbourg, but club owner Frank McCourt stated in a press release that he is staying with increased responsibilities overseeing all sporting activities.
The decision comes amid a chaotic period for Marseille, including consecutive 3-0 Champions League defeats that saw them finish outside the top 32, and a winless run in three Ligue 1 games—including a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and a blown two-goal lead against Strasbourg. Fan protests have also occurred, with supporters delaying kick-off at the Stade Velodrome.
Benatia's reported fallout with Greenwood has been highlighted by French media, with L'Equipe claiming the duo no longer speak. The former Manchester United winger, who has been the club's star player, was criticised by Benatia for neglecting commercial requirements and lacking work ethic. This could create further tension given Benatia's extended role.
Another player affected by the U-turn is Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, as Benatia was key in negotiating a loan deal alongside president Pablo Longori. The reason for Benatia's change of heart remains unclear, though his exit statement expressed regret over communication breakdowns and tensions in management, stating: 'I leave with the feeling of having done my utmost professionally, but with the regret of not having been able to calm the atmosphere around the team.'
