The club has been in a state of upheaval since manager Roberto De Zerbi's departure just five days before Benatia's initial resignation. De Zerbi's exit followed a particularly difficult period for Marseille, including a dramatic Champions League elimination and a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain that left them twelve points off the league leaders.
Things failed to improve under interim management, with Marseille conceding a 97th-minute equalizer in a frustrating 2-2 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday. This disappointing result appeared to be the catalyst for Benatia's original resignation announcement less than twenty-four hours later.
