Bellingham and Kane Fire England to World Cup Top Spot

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored as England secured top spot in Group L with a 2-0 win over Panama at the World Cup. The victory, while enough to advance, came after a disjointed performance that left manager Thomas Tuchel with concerns ahead of the knockout rounds.

First-Half Struggles

England struggled to break down a stubborn Panama side in the first half, failing to replicate the fluidity shown in their opening 4-2 win over Croatia. Panama, coached by former Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen, defended in a compact 5-4-1 formation and created chances on the counter. The best opportunity fell to José Luis Rodríguez, whose low shot was saved by Jordan Pickford after Jarell Quansah left space at left-back.

Tuchel had made several changes to inject urgency, starting Jude Bellingham in the No. 8 role and Morgan Rogers as the No. 10, with Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford on the wings. However, England were slow and predictable, with Rashford heading over and curling a free-kick wide before halftime.

Bellingham Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough came in the second half. From a corner by Saka, Bellingham expertly volleyed home from close range, steering the ball past goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Tuchel's muted reaction—he did not celebrate—reflected the team's overall lackluster display.

Bellingham then turned provider, driving forward and crossing for Kane to head home his 11th World Cup goal, surpassing Gary Lineker's record for England. The goal came after a jinking run that left defenders flat-footed.

Defensive Frailties

England's defensive vulnerabilities persisted throughout. Quansah, playing at right-back in place of the injured Reece James, was substituted after a collision with Rodríguez. Djed Spence replaced him. Panama substitute José Fajardo had a goal disallowed for offside late on, highlighting England's loose defending.

Tuchel rested Declan Rice due to a knock and a yellow card, while Nico O'Reilly stepped into left-back. The back three formation left spaces, and Panama exploited them on several occasions, with Pickford called into action early.

Group Stage Outcome

England finished top of Group L with seven points, ahead of Croatia and Ghana. Panama exited with zero points, having failed to score in either of their World Cup appearances. England will face the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Despite the win, the performance raised questions about England's ability to compete against elite teams. The atmosphere at the final whistle was subdued, with fans joining in a rendition of "Wonderwall" but lacking the jubilation of previous campaigns.

Tuchel acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, "We got the job done, but we must be sharper in the final third and more solid at the back." The team will now prepare for the knockout stage, hoping to build on the momentum of their group win.
