BBC Stars Share Sentiments on Gary Lineker Following Match of the Day Shake-Up
Gary Lineker's exit from Match of the Day in May 2025 has sparked a wave of reflection from his BBC colleagues, as the show's viewership experiences a notable decline. The former England striker, who brought decades of expertise and charisma to the presenter's role, left after a dispute over a social media post concerning the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Viewership Decline and New Presenting Line-Up
Since Lineker's departure, Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates, and Mark Chapman have taken over presenting duties on Saturday and Sunday evenings. However, recent figures reveal that the weekly audience for the two programmes has dropped to 6.88 million viewers, a decrease of 770,000 compared to the average from August to December 2024.
This downturn highlights the challenge of replacing a presenter widely regarded as one of the finest in football broadcasting.

Alan Hansen, the former Liverpool defender who shared the studio with Lineker for nearly 30 years, praised his colleague's sharp intellect and seamless transition from player to presenter. "He was really, really quick. Sharp, intelligent, clinical, prolific goalscorer as well," Hansen remarked, emphasizing the camaraderie and success they enjoyed on the show.
Alan Shearer, another close friend and Newcastle United legend, delivered an emotional tribute, noting Lineker's deep affection for Match of the Day. "Match of the Day means everything to him. He loves it, it means the world to him," Shearer said, acknowledging Lineker's ability to step into the shoes of the brilliant Des Lynam with ease.

Lineker's influence was starkly demonstrated in March 2023 when he was suspended from the BBC for criticising the government's asylum policy on social media. Alex Kay-Jelski, the BBC's director of sport, noted that overall brand engagement has increased, with clips and digital content attracting more viewers. "We're hitting 20 or 21 per cent more people overall," he said, indicating a shift in how audiences consume the programme.
