Late Bayern Munich Goals End Manchester United's Women's Champions League Campaign
Manchester United's aspirations in the Women's Champions League were dashed on Wednesday evening as Bayern Munich secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena. This result confirmed a 5-3 aggregate defeat for the English side, eliminating them from the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition.
Aggregate Defeat Seals United's Exit
The tie had been finely poised following last week's first leg at Old Trafford, where Bayern emerged with a narrow 3-2 advantage. United began the second leg in Munich with determination, and their efforts were rewarded early when Melvine Malard capitalised on a defensive mix-up to slot home a low finish in the 11th minute. This goal momentarily levelled the aggregate score, raising hopes of a remarkable comeback.
However, Bayern Munich responded with increasing confidence as the match progressed. Despite United's bright start, the German champions gradually asserted their dominance, creating numerous opportunities in the second half. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute when Glodis Viggosdottir powered a header past United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who got a hand to the ball but could not prevent it from crossing the line.
Dallmann Seals Semi-Final Berth for Bayern
Just four minutes later, Bayern extinguished any remaining United hopes as Linda Dallmann struck a decisive first-time finish into the roof of the net. This goal came after Malard made a heroic goal-line clearance, only for the ball to fall perfectly to Dallmann, who made no mistake from close range. The late double strike ensured Bayern's progression to the semi-finals, where they will face either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
United had shown resilience throughout the match, with Malard particularly threatening in the first half. Her curling effort early on was superbly saved by Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic, who also denied Jess Park's looping cross later in the half. At the other end, Bayern created chances through Vanessa Gilles and Fridolina Rolfo, but it was their second-half persistence that ultimately proved decisive.
The defeat marks the end of a valiant European campaign for Manchester United, who will now focus on domestic competitions. For Bayern Munich, the victory sets up a tantalising semi-final clash against Spanish opposition, keeping their hopes of Champions League glory alive.
