Manchester United moved to the brink of the Women's Champions League quarter-finals with a dominant 3-0 victory over Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their play-off. Goals from Elisabeth Terland, Melvine Malard and Julia Zigiotti Olme gave United a comfortable advantage heading into the second leg.
Manager Marc Skinner praised his side's ruthlessness, saying: 'I thought we were ruthless. The three goals were fantastic. I felt like our defending as a whole team was excellent.' Terland opened the scoring within three minutes after capitalising on a defensive error from former United player Vilde Bøe Risa.
United doubled their lead just before half-time when Malard curled a fine finish past Lola Gallardo. The visitors had chances after the break, but Phallon Tullis-Joyce made several key saves. Zigiotti Olme sealed the win with a late angled drive, ensuring United take a three-goal lead to Madrid.
The result sets up a potential quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich, should United see out the second leg. Skinner's team are in strong form, sitting second in the Women's Super League and having reached their first League Cup final.
