Bayern Munich conceded a goal after just eight seconds despite kicking off against Augsburg, as a Manuel Neuer error allowed Robin Fellhauer to set a new Bundesliga record.
Neuer played a weak chip while being closed down, and Fellhauer caught him in possession after just two seconds. Luis Diaz had played the ball back to the legendary goalkeeper, who then played himself into trouble. Fellhauer claimed the ball with Neuer well outside his box and drove forward to slot into an empty net.
Record-breaking strike
Fellhauer's effort broke a Bundesliga record that had stood for 12 years. Karim Bellarabi scored for Bayer Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund in 2014 after nine seconds, a mark matched in 2015 by Kevin Volland for Hoffenheim against Bayern Munich.
Bayern equalised through Ismael Saibari after 55 minutes, but Augsburg retook the lead. Neuer parried Calvin Brackelmann's effort into the path of Rodrigo Riberio, who tapped in the rebound.
Late equaliser and title race implications
Nathaniel Brown secured a point for Bayern with an 80th-minute equaliser, as the Bundesliga giants slipped up for the second time this season and allowed Borussia Dortmund to take top spot.
Record-breaker Fellhauer took the headlines from the game. "It's indescribable because you're part of something really big. Someone has to make up for those eight seconds now," he said.
Neuer's future under scrutiny
Neuer's performance could put his position under scrutiny with less than a year remaining on his contract. The World Cup winner signed a contract extension in the summer and now shares minutes with Jonas Urbig in Bayern's net.
The 23-year-old has played just one Bundesliga match this season but made his Germany debut during the international break, keeping a clean sheet. Lothar Matthäus has high expectations for the youngster. "I see Jonas Urbig as a serious challenger," Matthäus wrote. "His build-up play, his movements, his saves, and how he intercepts crosses – I thought I saw the young Manuel Neuer there."
Neuer, 40, has hinted he could retire at the end of the season. Speaking during pre-season, he admitted it looked to be the direction he was heading towards. "I don't play the matches just to say, 'This is my last game,'" Neuer said. "It doesn't matter whether this might have been my last time at one stadium or another – we'll see. It certainly looks very much as though I'm going to retire."
