Former Liverpool striker Milan Baros has opened up about his regret over leaving Anfield for Aston Villa in 2005, calling the move a mistake that still haunts him. The Czech international, who was part of Liverpool's legendary Champions League-winning squad in 2005, moved to Villa Park in search of regular first-team football but struggled to replicate his early promise.
Baros Reflects on His Transfer Decision
Speaking to the ECHO in 2022, Baros admitted that he should have fought harder to stay at Liverpool. "At that age, I wish I had fought a little bit more to stay in Liverpool and try to get fit," he said. "At that time, I decided to leave because I wanted to play more. In the end, I know it was a mistake." He revealed that he was told he would be the third-choice striker at Anfield, but with many games and injuries, he believes he could have earned more opportunities.
Baros' former clubs face off this Friday with a top-four finish at stake. Victory for either side would secure Champions League qualification, while defeat could open the door for Bournemouth or Brighton. Liverpool finished fifth in Baros' last full season at the club, but their Champions League triumph in Istanbul saw them return to Europe's elite competition. However, Baros was not involved in the group stage, having joined Villa before the Reds' first game.
Baros' Time at Aston Villa
Baros scored on his home debut for Villa, a winner against Blackburn, and netted 12 goals in all competitions in his first season. However, after Martin O'Neill's arrival in 2006, his form dipped, and he left in January 2007 in a swap deal for John Carew. Reflecting on playing against Liverpool, Baros said: "It was strange because after leaving I was playing against a team I had been part of for four years. It is never easy, but you always find the bigger motivation for the previous club."
After leaving Villa, Baros won two league titles with Lyon and the FA Cup on loan at Portsmouth in 2008. He continued playing until retirement in 2020 at age 38, with spells in Turkey and the Czech Republic. Liverpool did not sign a direct replacement for Baros in August 2005 but brought back Robbie Fowler in January 2006, whose goals helped secure a third-place finish and Champions League football.
