Balogun Strikes Again as USA Draw with Ecuador

The United States men's national team continued their encouraging run of performances under Mauricio Pochettino, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in Austin, Texas on Friday night. Folarin Balogun scored his second goal in as many appearances for the US, cancelling out Enner Valencia's first-half opener.

Pochettino has repeatedly stated that results are not his primary concern ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and the Americans again failed to turn dominance into victory. The US controlled possession for large spells, finishing with 66% of the ball, and created several promising moments against a disciplined Ecuador side that finished second in South American World Cup qualifying.

Ecuador took the lead in the 31st minute through veteran striker Enner Valencia, who marked his 101st cap with a clinical finish. The 35-year-old former West Ham and Everton forward capitalised on a defensive lapse, turning Chris Richards before firing past goalkeeper Matt Freese. Richards nearly atoned moments later, forcing a save from Hernán Galíndez from close range.

The US equalised in the 71st minute through Balogun, who continued his fine form in front of goal. The goal came from one of the Americans' more fluid attacking moves, rewarding their patience against Ecuador's defensive shell. Despite the draw, US players expressed disappointment at full-time, feeling they deserved more.

Pochettino deployed a three-man backline of Tim Ream, Chris Richards and Miles Robinson, with Tim Weah and Max Arfsten as wingbacks. The system looked comfortable after early nerves, with Weah particularly effective in his preferred club role. Midfielders Tanner Tessmann and Aidan Morris returned to the national team after long absences, anchoring a double pivot.

The US now turn their attention to their next fixtures as they continue preparations for the 2026 World Cup on home soil. While the winless run extends, the performances offer genuine cause for optimism.
