Atletico Madrid Stun 10-Man Barcelona in Champions League Quarter-Final First Leg

Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth scored as Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

Alvarez curled home a stunning free-kick after Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi was shown a red card for hauling down Giuliano Simeone. Sorloth then doubled Atletico's lead 20 minutes from time, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Barcelona, who had defeated Atletico in La Liga on Saturday, missed several chances both before and after Cubarsi's dismissal. Marcus Rashford was particularly wasteful, failing to convert multiple opportunities despite testing goalkeeper Juan Musso.

In the Europa League, Real Betis earned a 1-1 draw at Braga in their quarter-final first leg. Florian Grillitsch gave the Portuguese side an early lead with a clever finish, but Cucho Hernandez equalised from the penalty spot after Abde Ezzalzouli was fouled.

Betis had earlier hit the post through Marc Bartra, while Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek denied Hernandez before the Spaniard eventually scored from the spot.
