Atletico Madrid took control of their Champions League quarter-final tie by beating 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night.
Julian Alvarez curled home a stunning free-kick after Barcelona's Pau Cubarsi was shown a red card for hauling down Giuliano Simeone. Alexander Sorloth then doubled Atletico's lead with 20 minutes remaining to leave the Spanish champions with a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Barcelona, who had beaten Atletico in La Liga on Saturday, missed several chances both before and after Cubarsi's dismissal. Marcus Rashford went close on multiple occasions but could not find a way past Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso.
In the Europa League, Real Betis earned a 1-1 draw in their quarter-final first leg at Braga. Florian Grillitsch put the hosts ahead after five minutes, but Cucho Hernandez equalised from the penalty spot just after the hour mark following a foul on Abde Ezzalzouli.
