Aston Villa face a contract crossroads this summer as five key players enter the final two years of their deals. Centre-backs Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres, midfielder Youri Tielemans, captain John McGinn, and striker Ollie Watkins all have 24 months remaining on their current terms.
Club officials have dismissed reports that Tielemans' contract expires in 2026, confirming it runs until 2027. The Belgian international, who joined on a free transfer from Leicester City three years ago, continues to captain his national team and remains a vital asset for Unai Emery's side.
McGinn, who led Villa to Europa League glory, signed fresh terms in November 2023, while Watkins extended his deal in October 2023. Despite their contracts winding down, Villa have no intention of selling any of the quintet this summer, as they form the core of Emery's first-choice lineup.
However, contract renewals are complicated by Villa's wage bill, which UEFA's latest financial report ranks as the 11th highest in Europe—exceeding Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Inter, and Juventus. The club must increase revenue to gain greater transfer flexibility, but for now, spending remains constrained.
While selling players with two years left typically yields lower fees, Villa view each of these stars as integral to their project. Tielemans would be particularly difficult to replace, given his unique midfield qualities, and the club would still profit from any future sale due to his free-transfer arrival.
