Ashley Cole Appointed Head Coach of Serie B's Cesena in First Managerial Role
Ashley Cole Takes First Managerial Job at Cesena in Serie B

In a surprising career move, former England and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has been appointed as the head coach of Serie B side Cesena, marking his first managerial role in professional football. The Italian club, currently positioned eighth in the second tier, announced the appointment following the dismissal of previous manager Michele Mignani on Saturday.

Coaching Journey and Background

Since retiring from playing in 2019, Cole has steadily built his coaching credentials. His initial post-retirement role was at Derby County under former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard. He later served as an academy coach at Chelsea and in a first-team capacity at Everton, both under Lampard's guidance. Cole then joined Wayne Rooney's coaching staff at Birmingham City before taking on a position with the England national team, assisting interim manager Lee Carsley after Gareth Southgate's departure in summer 2024.

Contract Details and Club Statement

Cole has signed a short-term contract with Cesena that runs until the end of June, with an option to extend based on meeting specific conditions. In an official statement, Cesena expressed enthusiasm, saying, "The entire Cesena FC family is thrilled to welcome manager Ashley Cole to lead the Bianconeri first team and extends a warm welcome to him and his staff in Cesena, wishing them all the best of luck in this new adventure." He will be assisted by Jack Mesure, a former Chelsea academy coach.

Cole's Ambitions and Legacy

In a previous interview with The Telegraph, Cole emphasized his desire to establish a new identity as a coach, separate from his celebrated playing career. He stated, "I want people now to say, 'Ashley Cole, the coach'. Not, 'Ashley Cole, the footballer'. It has been quite hard but I think I have done enough on the training pitch. Ashley Cole the player is done. But Ashley Cole the coach, he is doing alright, or whatever it looks like." During his playing days, Cole achieved significant success, winning three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, and a Champions League with Arsenal and Chelsea.

This appointment represents a significant step for Cole as he transitions from a decorated player to a managerial figure in European football, bringing his experience and coaching philosophy to Italy's competitive second division.
