Ashley Cole Claims Arsenal's Broken Promise Forced His Chelsea Transfer
Former Premier League star Ashley Cole has revealed that broken promises by Arsenal forced his controversial move to Chelsea in 2006. The ex-defender, now 45, claims the North London club reneged on a contract agreement, leaving him with no choice but to join their London rivals.
The Infamous Transfer Saga
Cole's transfer to Chelsea for £5 million in 2006 remains one of the most contentious moves in Premier League history, with Blues defender William Gallas moving to Arsenal as part of the deal. Many Arsenal supporters believed the switch was motivated by money, especially after Cole revealed in his autobiography that Arsenal's new contract offer of £55,000 per week left him "trembling with anger" to the point he almost steered his car off the road.
However, speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast in January 2025, Cole insisted the real reason was Arsenal's failure to honor a higher salary they had allegedly agreed upon. "My situation was I knew what I was worth," he said. "If you don't want to pay it, no problem. But we did agree to pay it. Everything was agreed and then they pulled the rug [from] under me. They broke their promise - I couldn't tell you why."
The Tapping-Up Scandal and Fan Backlash
Back in 2005, Cole infamously met with Chelsea's then-manager Jose Mourinho and club chief executive Peter Kenyon in a London hotel without informing Arsenal. The incident resulted in a £100,000 penalty for Cole, later reduced to £75,000 upon appeal, with the Premier League branding it a 'tapping-up' affair.
When Arsenal and Chelsea met in December 2006, sections of the Arsenal support escalated their anger toward Cole by waving fake £20 notes bearing his image and dubbing him "Cashley." Yet Cole said he understood their frustrations. "It was hard [to leave]," he said. "People [don't] understand the pressure that I was under to leave or to stay. Ultimately I felt disrespected, this is my point of view, I felt disrespected."
Cole's Emotional Perspective on the Move
Cole has maintained that his departure was not motivated by a desire for more money, but rather a search for respect he believed was owed to him. "It is what it is, but sometimes when I speak to fans [and they say], 'You left, you hurt me', I'm like, 'Hold up'. People don't realise that I was the one who got hurt the most. That was my boyhood club, I'd been living the dream. But I got shafted."
He added: "It wasn't that I felt I wasn't getting looked after because I was a young player. I didn't ask for [Thierry] Henry's or [Patrick] Vieira's [wages]. I didn't want that. I was nothing to do with them. I just knew what I was worth and they broke their promise."
Long-Term Consequences and Regrets
Cole expressed bitterness about how the situation was handled, particularly the delayed acknowledgment from Arsenal officials. "I look back and I was bitter. In my head I was going, 'You put me through some s***'. And they just went like, 'Ash, you deal with it, and it's nothing to do with us'. And I'm whatever age I was, 23, and I'm like, 'You knew what happened'."
"I think [former Arsenal vice-chairman] David Dein came out and mentioned something recently. But it took him like 20 years. For 20 years I got abused. I don't blame fans [though]. I understand their frustration. They didn't know the full facts, they didn't know the truth."
Success at Chelsea and Looking Back
Cole's contentious transfer to Chelsea ultimately proved successful. Over his eight-year spell with the Blues, he made more than 330 appearances and claimed numerous titles, including the Premier League, Champions League, and four FA Cups. Meanwhile, Arsenal won just one FA Cup during that same period.
Speaking on ITV's Play To the Whistle in 2017, Cole stated he had no regrets about making the move to Chelsea. "I had a great time there, I missed the old players that were there but I moved on and won every trophy I could. I wouldn't look back and say I regretted it, no."
However, he couldn't resist a jibe at his former employers. Asked if he elicited much joy from Arsenal's lack of success after he left, he added: "If I'm honest, yeah - I still think to this day. I laugh to myself. I had a lot of history there and I think the way I left was maybe a bit dodgy but the lack of respect they showed me as well."
The revelations come as Arsenal and Chelsea prepare to meet again, with Arsenal chasing the Premier League title and Chelsea looking to gain an advantage in the race for Champions League spots, adding another chapter to this enduring football rivalry.
