Wordle TV Gameshow Spin-Off Announced with Host Savannah Guthrie
Wordle TV Gameshow Spin-Off with Savannah Guthrie

Wordle, the daily brainteaser that has captivated millions, is set to become a television gameshow. Five years after its release, the popular word puzzle will be adapted into a TV series hosted by Savannah Guthrie, the well-known presenter of NBC's Today show.

Production Details and Host

The series will be filmed in Manchester and broadcast across both the United States and the United Kingdom. Savannah Guthrie, who has been a staple on American morning television, will serve as the host. Jimmy Fallon's production company, Electric Hot Dog, is co-producing the show, which has drawn comparisons to ITV's Lingo, hosted by Adil Ray.

Game Format

The competition will mirror the original puzzle created by Josh Wardle in 2021. Contestants will compete for a cash prize by guessing a mystery five-letter word in six or fewer attempts. The Wordle typeface and colour scheme are expected to be replicated on screen, according to the BBC. Each episode will last 30 minutes, with a premiere slated for 2027. Casting is currently open.

Jimmy Fallon's Excitement

Jimmy Fallon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I am very honoured to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show. Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm, and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome. And she obviously knows how to host a show. I am super proud and happy and I think we developed a solid gamer for prime-time."

Delays and Personal Tragedy

Filming was originally delayed after Savannah Guthrie's family experienced a tragedy. Her mother, Nancy, disappeared in February, prompting Guthrie to take an extended break from screens. She returned to filming the Today show last month. The search for Nancy is ongoing, and Guthrie issued a heartfelt message on Mother's Day in the US, saying, "Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie - we miss you with every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you."

The Origin of Wordle

Josh Wardle created Wordle five years ago, and the addictive daily brainteaser quickly gained a massive following. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with coloured tiles indicating whether letters are correct and in the right position. Wardle sold the game to The New York Times the following year and admitted to the Sunday Times that he has not played it since.
