Emmanuel Adebayor's suggestion that Arsenal are cursed is being emphatically disproved by Mikel Arteta's side, who currently hold a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League. The former striker had questioned in 2023 whether the club was under a curse after their title drought extended to two decades.
Adebayor, who scored 62 goals for Arsenal between 2006 and 2009, never finished higher than third in the league. He told Sky Sports last year: 'I don't know whether there is a curse on the club, but it's going to be difficult for them to win the league.' He cited injuries and suspensions as recurring problems during his time at the club.
Arteta's team have responded by winning 14 of their last 15 league matches, building a significant advantage over Manchester City. They require just 14 points from their remaining seven games to equal the 84 that secured Liverpool's title last season. The Gunners are also through to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-1 aggregate win over Bayer Leverkusen.
After Tuesday's victory, Arteta focused on the immediate task. 'Every decision was focused on today's game,' he said. 'What was at stake was huge.' His side now face Sporting CP in the last eight, a repeat of their 2023 Europa League exit.
Arsenal remain in contention for four trophies, with the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday offering their first chance for silverware since the 2020 FA Cup. Adebayor, who later played for Tottenham and City, had hoped fans had moved past his infamous celebration against Arsenal, but the current squad's performances are providing the strongest rebuttal to any talk of a curse.
