Arsenal's Mikel Merino Ruled Out for Season with Rare Foot Injury
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been handed a brutal injury setback, with key midfielder Mikel Merino confirmed to miss the rest of the 2025/26 season. The Spaniard's recovery timeline from a broken foot has become clearer, forcing Arteta to plan without him for the crucial final months of the campaign.
Serious Blow Confirmed Ahead of Surgery
Merino has not featured since Arsenal's 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on January 25 and is scheduled to undergo foot surgery on Monday. Initially described as an "extended period" out, Arteta has now clarified that the midfielder faces approximately four months on the sidelines.
"It's a big blow," the Arsenal manager admitted. "Mikel offers something unique in the team but he's going to be out for four months unfortunately with a very rare injury. We need to support him, make sure he's very connected with the team because he can still add a lot of value to the players and the staff and keep him around."
Transfer Window Activity Highlighted Concern
The seriousness of Merino's condition was evident during the January transfer window's closing stages, when Arsenal actively explored midfield reinforcements. The club reportedly received contact from Sandro Tonali's agent, while also considering moves for Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka and former Gunner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who eventually joined Celtic.
Despite these explorations, Arsenal concluded the window without securing a new midfielder, leaving them short-handed for the season's remainder. Spanish outlet Cope reports Merino will undergo surgery with his focus shifting to recovering in time for this summer's World Cup, which begins on June 11.
Rare Nature of the Injury Explained
Merino's father detailed the unusual nature of the injury on Spanish radio program El Larguero, describing it as a stress fracture with internal complications. "It is very rare. There is a bit of uncertainty about the timing, because there is no clear history of this type of injury," he explained. "Injuries never come at a good time. Considering the problem he has, he is accepting the situation. Players must be prepared. It's tough, but you have to look on the bright side: there are injuries much worse than this one."
Recovery Timeline and Squad Support
Merino hopes to return to training with Arsenal by the season's end to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup. He was present at Emirates Stadium on Saturday to watch Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Sunderland and will remain around the squad during his rehabilitation.
Arsenal's official statement read: "Mikel will have surgery in the coming days and will then begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme. Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season. Everyone is fully focused on supporting Mikel to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."
This injury represents a significant challenge for Arteta's tactical plans, particularly given Merino's unique qualities in midfield. With the Premier League title race heating up and European commitments ongoing, Arsenal must now navigate the season's climax without one of their key performers.
