Arsenal Edge Past Crystal Palace 8-7 on Penalties in Dramatic Carabao Cup Quarter-Final
Arsenal win 8-7 on penalties in Carabao Cup thriller

Arsenal secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout victory over Crystal Palace, following a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Late Drama Forces Shootout

The Gunners looked to have booked their spot in the last four when a Maxence Lacroix own goal ten minutes from time broke the deadlock after sustained Arsenal pressure. However, Marc Guehi struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time, squeezing a corner home for Palace's first shot on target to send the tie to penalties.

Perfect Penalties and Kepa's Decisive Save

The shootout was a exhibition of spot-kick precision, with the first 15 penalties all converted. The drama finally concluded when Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga saved from Palace's Maxence Lacroix, sending the hosts through 8-7 and setting up a semi-final clash with Chelsea in January.

Despite the victory, manager Mikel Arteta expressed frustration that his side had not sealed the win in normal time. He praised his team's resilience, stating it was "emotionally tough" to concede so late but highlighted their composure in the shootout. Walter Benitez, Palace's deputy goalkeeper, was in outstanding form, making crucial saves to deny Noni Madueke, Gabriel Jesus, Eberechi Eze, and a last-gasp effort from substitute Declan Rice.

Arteta Demands Ruthless Edge

Arteta emphasised the fine margins in cup competitions, saying, "The margins should have been bigger, it should have been three or four... we have to pay attention to every detail." The win marks a fourth consecutive victory for Arsenal, who regained top spot in the Premier League at the weekend.

For Crystal Palace, the defeat was compounded by an injury to defender Chris Richards, who was stretchered off with a foot injury requiring stitches. Manager Oliver Glasner remained hopeful Richards could return for the New Year's Day fixture against Fulham.
