Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres as Mikel Arteta looks to revamp his attacking options ahead of the new season.
The Swedish forward has been in scintillating form since joining the Portuguese giants last summer, netting an impressive 36 goals in all competitions. His performances have caught the eye of several top European clubs, with Arsenal now emerging as serious contenders for his signature.
Arteta's Striker Search Intensifies
Mikel Arteta is believed to be prioritising a new centre-forward this summer, with Gyokeres high on his wishlist. The Gunners boss wants more firepower to complement Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in attack.
"Gyokeres has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League," a source close to the club told The Mirror. "His physicality, movement and finishing make him an ideal fit for Arteta's system."
Record-Breaking Season in Portugal
The 25-year-old has taken Portuguese football by storm since his €20m move from Coventry City. His goal tally includes:
- 24 league goals in 30 appearances
- 5 goals in the Europa League
- 7 goals in domestic cup competitions
Gyokeres's release clause stands at €100m (£85m), but Sporting may be willing to negotiate given the player's desire to test himself in a more competitive league.
Competition for Signature
Arsenal aren't the only club monitoring the situation:
- Chelsea have been long-term admirers
- Paris Saint-Germain see him as potential Mbappe replacement
- Bayern Munich considering options
However, Arsenal's project under Arteta and their return to Champions League football could give them an edge in negotiations.
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as Arsenal weigh up whether to meet Sporting's valuation or explore alternative targets like Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen.
