Arsenal Prepare £60m Gyokeres Bid as Man Utd Submit Rival Offer

Arsenal are preparing an improved bid for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with Manchester United also submitting a rival offer, according to reports in Portugal. The Gunners' initial proposal of €55 million (£46.8m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected by Sporting, who are holding out for a fee closer to €80m (£68.1m).

Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, recently met with his Sporting counterpart, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for the Sweden international. Maisfutebol reports that Arsenal are now ready to submit an improved bid worth €70m (£59.6m) including bonuses. There is 'growing optimism' in Gyokeres' camp that a deal can be agreed.

Manchester United have also made their interest clear, offering €60m (£51.1m) up front plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons. However, United cannot offer Champions League football next season, and it is reported that direct talks with the striker have 'encountered obstacles'. Gyokeres finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games.

Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres and his agent, denying that any transfer fee had been agreed. Varandas stated: 'Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m because I never promised him that.' Gyokeres responded on Instagram, saying: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.'
