Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of next week's return fixture in the Spanish capital.
First Half Dominance
The Gunners started brightly, controlling possession and creating several early chances. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, cutting inside from the right flank and curling a superb left-footed shot into the far corner beyond the reach of Jan Oblak. The goal was a reward for Arsenal's high-pressing game and fluid attacking play, which had Atletico on the back foot for much of the first half.
Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli both went close to doubling the lead, but Oblak made crucial saves to keep the visitors in the contest. Atletico, as expected, were organised defensively, but they offered little in attack during the opening 45 minutes, with Antoine Griezmann isolated up front.
Second Half Response
Diego Simeone's side came out with renewed intensity after the break. They pressed higher and began to win second balls, disrupting Arsenal's rhythm. The equaliser came in the 63rd minute when a corner was only partially cleared, and Rodrigo De Paul volleyed home from the edge of the box, with the ball taking a slight deflection off Declan Rice to beat David Raya.
Arsenal pushed for a winner in the latter stages, with substitute Leandro Trossard hitting the post from a tight angle. Atletico defended resolutely, with Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez making several blocks and clearances to preserve the draw.
Tactical Battle
The match was a classic tactical battle between Mikel Arteta's possession-based approach and Simeone's counter-attacking style. Arsenal had 62% possession and 15 shots to Atletico's 8, but the visitors were clinical with their opportunities. The second leg at the Estadio Metropolitano promises to be another tense affair, with both sides having a realistic chance of advancing to the final.
Arteta praised his team's performance but lamented the lack of a second goal. "We dominated large parts of the game and created enough chances to win," he said. "But Atletico are a tough side to break down, and they showed their quality on the counter. It's all to play for in Madrid."
Simeone, meanwhile, was satisfied with the result. "To come here and get a draw is a good result for us," he said. "We know the second leg will be difficult, but we have faith in our ability and our fans."
