Cristian Romero, the Tottenham Hotspur captain, has emerged as a transfer target for both Arsenal and Chelsea, according to Italian media reports. The 28-year-old defender is expected to leave Spurs this summer after a turbulent end to the season, which saw him attract criticism from fans.
Romero's Uncertain Future at Tottenham
Romero's decision to fly back to Argentina for medical treatment on a knee injury did not sit well with the north London supporters, particularly when it was claimed he would miss the crucial final Premier League match against Everton. He eventually returned to see his teammates secure their top-flight status, but with Tottenham having signed Jan Paul van Hecke and Marco Senesi, his position at the club looks precarious.
Inter Milan had been early contenders for his signature, but Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claims that both Mikel Arteta's Arsenal and Xabi Alonso's Chelsea are now vying for the former Atalanta defender. Arsenal are actively seeking centre-back reinforcements as William Saliba is set to miss a significant part of the season following back surgery. Chelsea, meanwhile, are poised to confirm the signing of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace but are also thought to be pursuing an additional centre-half.
Price and Interest from Other Clubs
Mundo Deportivo has suggested that Tottenham are seeking approximately £25.9 million for Romero, despite having previously valued him at around £60.3 million. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have also been linked with the Argentine, and Spurs rejected an approach from Atletico last season when they made enquiries.
Inter sporting director Piero Ausilo virtually confirmed his club's interest, telling Sky Sport Italy: "It's definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club (Tottenham). These things take some time but there's definitely interest. Let's see."
Regardless of any change of heart, Romero's departure from Tottenham this summer appears inevitable. The prospect of him joining a direct rival would add an intriguing twist to the transfer window.
