Arsenal maintained their winning start in the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over Lille, but it required a second-half salvo from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka to break down a stubborn French side.
Mikel Arteta's much-changed line-up struggled for over an hour before the introduction of key substitutes turned the game decisively in Arsenal's favour. The result sets up a heavyweight clash at Bayern Munich next week and signals Arsenal's intent in Europe this season.
Arteta's gamble nearly backfires
Arteta made five changes to the side that beat Leeds on Saturday, bringing in Timber, Bruno Guimaraes, Eze, Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyokeres. The fresh faces failed to seize their opportunities, and Arsenal looked disjointed against a Lille side that appeared average.
Gyokeres, in particular, looked off the pace after his frustrating start to the season. Arsenal took 20 minutes to register a shot, with Guimaraes firing wide from Timber's pull-back and Merino heading straight at Lille keeper Berke Ozer.
Merino's frustration boiled over when he was booked for a blatant trip on Lille forward Ayase Ueda. The Emirates atmosphere grew tense as Arsenal lacked rhythm and momentum.
Second-half blitz
The game changed in the space of seven minutes. After 64 minutes, Madueke's short pass found Timber, who turned neatly and fired a cross shot into the far corner to break the deadlock.
Arteta then introduced Saka, whose low cross was swept home by Eze for his first goal of the season. Three minutes later, substitutes Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard combined to set up Saka, whose low shot flew into the far corner to make it 3-0.
When he needed them most, the big guns stepped up from the bench to maintain Arteta's perfect start to the Champions League campaign. There was a late cameo for Lille's former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, who received a mixed reception.
