Ibrahima Konate has reportedly informed his Liverpool teammates that he will not extend his contract and intends to leave Anfield this summer. The French defender's decision comes as the club also parted ways with head coach Arne Slot following a fifth-place Premier League finish.
The 26-year-old centre-back, who joined from RB Leipzig for £36million in 2021, has been a key figure in the Reds' defence. His contract expires at the end of June, and according to RMC Sport, he has told teammates his mind is made up. Real Madrid are considered the frontrunners to sign him.
Slot's dismissal was announced on the same day, with Liverpool securing Champions League qualification despite finishing fifth. The club now faces the task of replacing both manager and a key defender.
In April, Konate expressed optimism about a new deal, saying, 'For sure, there is a big chance I'm here next season... we are close to an agreement.' However, talks have since stalled. Liverpool are expected to bolster their defence with Jeremy Jacquet arriving from Rennes and Giovanni Leoni returning from injury, but further signings may be needed if Joe Gomez departs.
