A 20-year-old footballer has died after losing control of his car and crashing into a utility pole. Santiago Nicolás Corazza, who played for fifth-division side Club Atlético y Social Argentinos del Norte, was driving his Ford Ka when he lost control on Provincial Route 65 near Cervantes at around 9:30am on Sunday. The impact threw him from the vehicle in Argentina's Río Negro Province.
Hospital and tributes
He was rushed to Francisco López Lima Hospital in General Roca in critical condition but died several hours later. Originally from Cervantes, Corazza began his career at Deportivo Roca's youth academy before spending time at Banfield. Deportivo Roca paid tribute online, writing: "We'll always cherish the wonderful memories we shared with you, Santiago Corazza, especially those days with the 2006 team."
Investigation and weather
Police and forensic investigators examined the crash scene. Local reports said rain may have made the roads slick, and Sunday's scheduled Liga Confluencia matches had already been suspended earlier that morning. At the time of his death, Corazza played for Argentinos del Norte in the top tier of the Liga Deportiva Confluencia. He is survived by his parents, sister, and grandmothers.
Another footballer death
The incident follows the death of 26-year-old football star Usalifa "Ussa" Jos Indi, who collapsed while running on July 20 in Armil, Portugal. Indi, who previously played for FC Porto, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest; no crime is suspected.
