Kimi Antonelli secured his third consecutive victory at the Miami Grand Prix, defeating McLaren's Lando Norris in a tight battle to the finish. The win extends the 19-year-old's lead in the world championship to 20 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell, marking an impressive start to his second Formula 1 season.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli's performance as his best yet, comparing him to Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner. “It’s astounding, these few races,” Wolff said. “We’ve given him a car that is very good, but how he’s been able to monetise on that every single weekend is special.”
Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s maturity, noting that his rookie season was marred by unforced errors, but he has now adapted swiftly. “It’s easier to slow someone that is wild because you won’t be able to accelerate a donkey,” he remarked. “For me, that was his best race so far.”
The team principal also acknowledged the challenge of managing Antonelli’s rising fame in Italy, where football’s absence has shifted focus to Sinner and Antonelli. “Now it’s all about Sinner and Antonelli, and Antonelli and Sinner,” Wolff said. “They are the two superstars.”
