AngryGinge Recreates Wayne Rooney's Iconic Boxing Celebration at Sidemen Charity Match
AngryGinge cheekily copied Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney's iconic boxing knockout celebration after scoring in the Sidemen Charity Match at Wembley Stadium. The I'm A Celebrity winner put the YouTube Allstars in front with a powerful bullet header and then pulled out several exuberant celebrations in the corner.
Rooney's Signature Celebration Revived
The first celebration was a dramatic kneeslide, which was closely followed by a big punch directed towards the crowd. Ginge then turned around and executed four pretend punches before theatrically falling to the floor. This move was an exact replica of what Rooney did after scoring against Tottenham in 2015, just days after a video emerged showing him being knocked out by former teammate Phil Bardsley in a playful sparring session.
Despite that infamous knockout incident over a decade ago, Rooney has received strong backing from former Manchester United teammate Louis Saha to potentially destroy YouTube star and boxer KSI in the ring, provided one key condition is met.
Saha Backs Rooney for Boxing Success
Louis Saha told BetVictor: "Wayne Rooney was one of the players who we were always boxing. We had a coach who allowed us the day before the game to go on the punch bags. He loved boxing and I think when he was younger, he was a bit of a boxer. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go into it. He is one of these people who love their sport, whether it’s golf or boxing or football."
"He is committed and wants to compete and win. Rooney vs KSI? I would love to see that. He’d have to get into shape but we know he can be a terrific athlete. He could go on a night out and then be the best player in training the next day. He's an unbelievable athlete and if he got his fitness back, I’d back him to destroy these guys like KSI."
Rooney's Current Career Focus
KSI has not fought since losing to Tommy Fury in October 2023, with the entertainer now focusing on other ventures, including his minority stake in football club Dagenham & Redbridge. Meanwhile, Rooney has transitioned into punditry over the last eighteen months following challenging managerial spells at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.
Rooney has been working primarily with Amazon Prime Video and the BBC on Match of the Day. The Manchester United icon also hosts a podcast on the BBC platform. However, reports indicate that he is prepared to leave these media roles behind in a determined attempt to return to football management.
Saha added further insight: "A bit like Roy Keane, these guys have an enormous legacy. He's England’s best ever player and there is a huge expectation when he gets a new management job. These sorts of players can often be more comfortable in punditry, but I think he will still have a desire to make things a success as a manager. He just needs to improve his communication skills and learn from other great coaches."
"Being away from the game can be the best place to learn, hopefully that happens with Wayne."
