Liverpool supporters at Anfield were given extra reason to celebrate on Sunday as news of Manchester United's defeat filtered through during their own 2-0 win over Brighton.
The Reds' Premier League rivals slumped to a 3-0 loss against Bournemouth at Old Trafford, and when the stadium announcer read out the result from the other 2pm kick-off, a sarcastic 'Wey' rang out around the ground.
Liverpool climb above Chelsea
The result moved Liverpool two points above their closest competitors, Chelsea. A Pascal Gross own goal, first hit by Florian Wirtz, was added to by an Alexander Isak strike in the first half to secure all three points for Andoni Iraola's side.
On the red side of Manchester, United dropped to 16th place and sit just one point above the relegation zone. The result is also set to boost Liverpool's confidence ahead of their clash with their fierce rivals later in November.
Iraola on the win and Wirtz
Iraola was buoyed by the result as he claimed his first home win of the Premier League campaign. Discussing the game, he said: "Very happy for today, very happy overall for these four wins. I think we had today a very good opposition in front, similar to Villarreal the other day – teams that technically are really good. It's difficult to defend them a lot of times."
"I think today the key was how we started. We needed a stronger start, be aggressive, recover the ball, win our duels, be dangerous in transitions. I think we've done it and it has been a different game from the last ones, where we've conceded first and after you need a comeback. Today, I think we've started better and the game has gone differently."
Iraola also provided an update on Wirtz after he was forced off in the 65th minute with an ankle injury. The Liverpool boss confirmed that the early indicators suggest it is not a significant issue for the winger.
He added: "Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch with a small twist of the ankle. It doesn't look very big but we are playing every three days so we need to see where he is."
