Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has 'broken down' following the death of opponent Jesus De Miguel, who died after a collision during a Spanish second division match.
Collision and Death
During a match in the Spanish second division, Owono and De Miguel were involved in a challenge, leaving De Miguel requiring medical attention. He was rushed off for medical attention and treated in hospital, but his condition deteriorated, with his tragic death confirmed on Tuesday morning, reports the Mirror.
In a statement, his club, CD Tenerife, said: "Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome."
The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments.
Goalkeeper's Reaction
Reports from AS in Spain say Owono was 'crying and praying' in the dressing room after the game ended. He was also reportedly 'visibly shaken' throughout the journey back to Andorra.
His Instagram account has since been deleted, after reportedly being flooded with messages of abuse. It is believed Owono had wanted to contact De Miguel and his family to apologise and offer his support before making any public statement, but the death of the 30-year-old has changed the situation.
Sources close to the keeper told AS: "He is a caring, very kind person. He has no malice."
Club Statements and Background
The club confirmed the collision was unintentional, with Owono not meaning to hurt his opponent. Video footage shows him turning to check on the player while others turned away, clearly distressed.
Reports in Spain claimed De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and was resuscitated, before he was taken to hospital and placed in intensive care.
In a separate statement Andorra said: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife."
The striker joined Tenerife from fellow Spanish side Castellón last summer. So far this season, he had made six appearances, with all of those coming from the bench.
