Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after disagreements over the team’s tactical approach, with Darren Fletcher taking over on an interim basis. The decision was announced following a run of disappointing results, including home losses to Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves.
Fletcher, a former United midfielder, will lead the team for Wednesday’s away match against Burnley. There is no clarity yet on a permanent successor, with suggestions ranging from Fletcher continuing until the end of the season to a swift permanent appointment.
Reaction to the sacking has been mixed. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “I am surprised, but when you look at his record in black and white, I’m not surprised. I noticed a change in his demeanour before Christmas – there was a coldness about him.”
United defender Harry Maguire paid tribute on Instagram, posting a photo with Amorim and writing: “Thank you for everything boss. I wish you all the best in the future.”
Fans have offered varied views. One supporter, Kevin Wilson, commented: “Amorim took over an underperforming club and thought he could perform shock therapy. He gave up on last season and isolated players.” Another, Mark Trueman, said: “I wished he wasn’t so stubborn with his system.”
Names such as Zinedine Zidane have been linked, but observers note he last managed in 2021, speaks limited English and has shown no interest in a Premier League move, making him an unlikely candidate.
