Ruben Amorim has confessed that Manchester United's mounting struggles are his responsibility and suggested he may step aside if the team's trajectory does not improve. The Portuguese manager spoke after a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham, which leaves United facing their worst-ever Premier League finish.
Amorim, appointed in November to replace Erik ten Hag, has overseen a seven-match winless run in all competitions, with five losses. The team's home record under his 3-4-3 system has been particularly poor, with West Ham's first league win at Old Trafford in 18 years.
“It’s not the players’ fault. It’s my fault, I’m responsible,” Amorim said. “If we cannot change that really fast, we should give our place to different persons.” He added that he feels “embarrassed” and said the squad lacks the fear of losing that a big club should have.
Despite a midweek 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, United have failed to translate European form to domestic duty. Amorim had originally wanted to join at the end of the season but was told to arrive mid-season or lose the job.
The loss to West Ham, with goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen, leaves United rooted in the bottom half. Amorim previously described his team as “maybe the worst Manchester United team in history” and now faces the most decisive period of his short tenure.
