Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has suggested he may be unable to implement his preferred style of play at the club because he cannot sign the necessary players. The Portuguese boss, who favours a 3-4-3 formation, indicated that adapting his approach might be necessary after realising the financial outlay required for his ideal system is unlikely to materialise.
Speaking on Christmas Eve, Amorim stated: 'We can play a different way to take more quality from these players because I have the feeling that if we have to play a perfect 3-4-3 we need to spend a lot of money and need time. I’m starting to understand that is not going to happen so maybe I have to adapt.' The comments came despite United spending around £216m last summer on recruits including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.
Ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Leeds United, Amorim was pressed on those remarks but declined to expand. 'I don’t want to talk about that. I just focus on the Leeds game,' he said. When asked if he regretted making the statement, he replied: 'No, no, no. But I don’t want to talk about it.'
The Red Devils boss also poured cold water on expectations for the January transfer window. 'The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversations in this moment to have any change in the squad. There is a process, there is an idea. That is going to continue,' he said.
United currently sit sixth in the table, but a victory at Elland Road would lift them to fourth, at least temporarily. Amorim’s cryptic comments have fuelled speculation about tensions behind the scenes, though he refused to clarify whether his understanding of the club's transfer plans had shifted.
