Ruben Amorim has moved to quash speculation linking him with the Manchester United managerial role, insisting he has received no contact from the Premier League club. The Sporting Lisbon head coach was questioned on the matter following his side's 4-2 triumph over Farense in the Portuguese League Cup on Thursday.
The 38-year-old has been touted as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, who is facing mounting pressure after a difficult start to the season. Reports have suggested that Amorim is on a two-man shortlist should United opt to part ways with the Dutchman.
Speaking after the match, in which summer signing Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick, Amorim declined to engage with the speculation. "This year I'm not going to go back to the same conversation as last year," he said. "I'm not going to make any kind of comment on these situations. We don't know the future, it depends on the results. I have not been contacted by Manchester United."
This is not the first time Amorim has been linked with the Old Trafford hotseat. In 2021, he dismissed similar talk as mere rumours and jokingly suggested United should appoint Ten Hag. Those comments have resurfaced as the current United boss faces an uncertain future.
Since then, Ten Hag moved to Old Trafford, while Amorim remained at Sporting, winning the Primeira Liga before a fourth-place finish last term. With eight wins from nine league games this season, the Portuguese coach's stock has risen again, but he insists his focus remains on the job at hand.
