Chelsea travel to Sunderland for a Premier League fixture on Sunday without Josh Acheampong, who has been left out of Xabi Alonso's squad. The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season and has featured regularly under Alonso, playing in central defence and at right-back.
Alonso confirmed the England Under-21 international is dealing with a fitness problem, though not a serious one.
Minor fitness issue
“He's recovering from a minor thing so he missed the fitness to be ready for today but we're expecting he'll be back after the international,” said the Blues boss. “It's a pity because he was in a good moment.”
In Acheampong's absence, Alonso selected a back four of Marco Palestra, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Pep Chavarria. A midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia lined up behind a front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto.
Other team changes
Estevao has been dropped to the bench despite starting and impressing in the 2-0 win over Manchester United last time out. With Joao Pedro still injured, the 19-year-old forward had hoped to keep his starting place but missed out at Sunderland.
Mike Penders remains in goal, while Emiliano Martinez continues his recovery from injury and is not yet available. “For sure after the break he will be available,” Alonso said of the Argentine goalkeeper.
Speaking last month on Acheampong's progress, Alonso said: “He has taken a step forward. He is playing more maturely and more aggressively, and is knowing what it takes to compete in the Premier League. He is on that journey as he has great potential and great qualities. He has played and he will play again.”
