Arne Slot Confirms Alexander Isak's Return to Liverpool Training
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a significant injury boost by confirming that striker Alexander Isak will return to team training on Thursday. The £125million signing has been sidelined for more than three months after suffering a broken leg during Liverpool's 2-1 victory away at Tottenham in mid-December.
Isak's Long Road to Recovery and Potential FA Cup Comeback
The 26-year-old Sweden international has been training individually in recent weeks as he works his way back to full fitness. His lengthy absence has exacerbated Liverpool's injury woes this season, and he also missed Sweden's successful World Cup play-off campaign, where his country qualified for this summer's tournament.
"I think Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup yesterday evening and apart from that he's going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow," Slot told club media on Wednesday. "If you've worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that's for everyone very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place."
Slot emphasized that while this represents only Isak's first session with the team after such a prolonged absence, his return could prove crucial for Liverpool's final push this season. "Of course it's only his first session, after three or four months [out], with the team but it's good to have him back because we all know who we signed and we've signed an incredible striker," the manager stated.
Potential Impact on Liverpool's Season and Weekend Fixture
The timing of Isak's return could see him feature in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final away to Manchester City, providing a timely boost for Liverpool's attacking options. Slot acknowledged the striker's potential impact, saying, "So to have him again in a team that's usually generating quite a lot chances - and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start - but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us."
Isak's return represents a major positive development for Liverpool, who have struggled with multiple injury setbacks throughout the campaign. The Swedish forward's quality and goal-scoring ability could prove instrumental as Liverpool compete on multiple fronts during the season's crucial final months.
Additional Liverpool Injury Updates from Arne Slot
Slot also provided updates on several other Liverpool players dealing with fitness concerns:
- Jeremie Frimpong: The defender will undergo a scan after being substituted just 12 minutes into his appearance for the Netherlands on Tuesday. Slot explained that the national team doctor described the substitution as precautionary, but further assessment is required.
- Alisson Becker: The goalkeeper will be out for a bit longer as he continues his recovery from injury.
- Federico Chiesa: The Italian winger has returned from international duty where he was unable to play but trained with Liverpool on Wednesday and will be available for the weekend fixture.
- Mohamed Salah: The Egyptian forward is "very close" to returning according to Slot, who praised Salah's remarkable recovery capabilities. "Mo looked at me and said, 'I think I will be available for City.' He just does so much for his body for such a long time that he recovers so fast," Slot revealed.
With multiple key players returning to fitness, Liverpool's injury situation appears to be improving at a crucial stage of the season, potentially strengthening their chances in both domestic and European competitions.
