Trent Alexander-Arnold's World Cup Hopes Dashed as Tuchel Favours Ben White
Alexander-Arnold's World Cup Dream Fades Under Tuchel

Trent Alexander-Arnold's World Cup Ambitions in Jeopardy After England Snub

Former England captain Stuart Pearce has delivered a stark assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold's international future, asserting that the Real Madrid defender's hopes of securing a spot in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad are effectively finished. This verdict comes after Alexander-Arnold was omitted from the German manager's selection for the March international break, despite England facing player withdrawals.

Tuchel's Hard Choice and Alexander-Arnold's Struggles

Alexander-Arnold has endured a challenging debut season at Real Madrid, grappling with injury issues that have hampered his consistency. Thomas Tuchel addressed the decision to leave the creative full-back out of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, acknowledging the controversy but standing firm. "I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out," Tuchel stated. "We had a call. I tried to explain the situation but he just has to accept it."

The situation was compounded when Ben White, previously in exile from the England setup, was recalled to the squad and featured in Tuchel's side during a draw at Wembley. Pearce interprets this move as a definitive signal regarding Alexander-Arnold's standing. "I don't think Thomas Tuchel fancied him from the outset, if I'm being honest," Pearce revealed in an interview with Betway. "The fact that he's brought Ben White into the squad when we've had an injury in that position probably tells you everything about his chances of getting in this summer and maybe beyond."

Tuchel's Reasoning and the Road Ahead

Tuchel elaborated on his selection rationale, describing it as a "sportive choice" that was "difficult" and potentially "unfair." He emphasised opting for Ben White due to recent performances, including a cup final against Manchester City and a Champions League match, where White demonstrated resilience. "It was a chance for me to meet him in person, see how he interacts with the group," Tuchel explained. "I think I know what Trent gives us so the choice was for Ben and for Tino Livramento on the right side."

Pearce acknowledged the harsh realities of football management but urged Alexander-Arnold to persevere. "That's life as a footballer in many ways, and that was always a worry for me whenever a new manager came in," he noted. However, he added a note of encouragement: "If you're doing good things for Real Madrid, you're certainly on the radar well and truly. So it's down to him to fight for a place, whether it be this summer, which I don't think it will be, or beyond."

With the World Cup looming at the end of the season, Alexander-Arnold faces a critical period to reclaim his international prospects, but the current indicators from Tuchel's actions and Pearce's analysis suggest a steep uphill battle.
