Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has backed Trent Alexander-Arnold to return to Anfield this summer, as the Reds grapple with a deepening crisis in the position. Arne Slot's side have been without Conor Bradley for the remainder of the season following knee surgery, while summer signing Jeremie Frimpong has struggled with injuries since his move from Bayer Leverkusen.
The issues have forced Slot to deploy centre-back Joe Gomez and midfielders Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai on the right side of defence at various points. Alexander-Arnold, who left for Real Madrid last summer, has endured a difficult debut season in Spain and has failed to cement a regular starting berth, fuelling speculation of a return to his boyhood club.
Speaking to Boyle Sport, Johnson said: "Who would be my choice to be Liverpool's starting right-back next season? You'd love to see Trent back, of course you would." However, he also expressed confidence in Bradley's long-term potential, adding: "As long as he comes back fit, Conor Bradley for me... he looks more athletic, stronger, with more desire to defend, but keen to get forward."
Johnson believes Frimpong can still play a role, particularly against teams that sit deep. The Dutchman started in the 2-1 defeat at Wolves and could retain his spot for Friday's FA Cup fifth-round tie at Molineux. With limited options, Slot will be hoping for a swift resolution to the right-back conundrum.
